ENVIRONMENT: SURIN BEACH VILLA
Location: Surin Beach, Thailand.
Status: Project completed.
Brief:
To create a unique Thai beach house interior for a modern family, drawing on a mix of global coastal references while remaining grounded in its local context. The intention was to balance rustic and contemporary elements, developing a space that felt relaxed, characterful and layered, yet cohesive and appropriate to its setting.
Existing architectural elements were subtly refined to modernise the space, with black matt taps, doors and window frames introducing contrast and a consistent visual thread. Dark wooden ceilings were softened with light straw rattan to brighten the interiors and reinforce the coastal character, while existing blinds were replaced with double-layered linen curtains in white and clay to enhance light, privacy and atmosphere.
Furniture and fittings were selected as a curated mix of contemporary and rustic pieces, resulting in a bespoke interior that feels relaxed yet intentional — a home away from home designed to hold long-term value.
Outcome:
The interior draws from a mix of influences — from rustic beach villas in Indonesia and Mexico, to artisanal riads in Morocco and design-led holiday homes across western Europe — brought together to form a considered and distinctive spatial language.
A soft, textural backdrop was created using stucco-effect, water-based paints to emulate the look of Tadelakt throughout the main spaces, with traditional lime-based applications used in wet areas for their natural waterproofing, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. This provided a light and natural base against which timber, rich textiles and bold artwork could sit.
