IDENTITY: LUMI BEACHCLUB
Location: Gilli Trawangan, Indonesia.
Status: Project completed.
Brief:
Lumi is a beachclub resort in Gili Trawangan, originally designed by Indonesia’s pre-eminent architect, Andra Matin, and completed in 2020. During the initial development, multiple designers contributed to different aspects of the interiors, resulting in a fragmented spatial and brand identity that no longer reflected the ambition of the architecture or connected clearly with its audience.
We were invited to redefine the brand and interior design direction across the Beachclub, Hotel, Restaurant, Bar and Retail spaces — creating a cohesive language that could sit comfortably within Matin’s architecture while strengthening Lumi’s identity as a contemporary destination.
Outcome:
Andra Matin’s work is rooted in a modern interpretation of traditional values, shaped by context, climate and environmental sensitivity. Following this approach, we developed a new interior concept that brings together Indonesian cultural references with a restrained, modern aesthetic suited to an international audience.
Rather than attempting to reference the vast diversity of Indonesia’s regional identities, the design focuses on one element that has become universal across the archipelago: locally made textiles as everyday dress and cultural expression. Batik and Ikat — both deeply symbolic, technically distinct and regionally specific — formed the conceptual foundation of the interiors.
Working closely with local artisans and cultural specialists, we reinterpreted traditional textile patterns and motifs into contemporary interior elements, including tiles, rugs, cushions, wall hangings and decorative objects. These references are subtle rather than literal, allowing the spaces to feel grounded in place while remaining calm, modern and globally relevant.
The result is an interior language that feels deeply rooted in its surroundings, aligned with the architecture, and distinctive within both the local and international hospitality landscape.
